Assumptions

  • Bag yields are manufacturer-published values for standard 40 lb, 60 lb, and 80 lb bags of dry mix; actual yield varies slightly by brand.
  • Bag count is rounded up to the next whole bag.
  • Bag price range is a typical big-box retail range before tax.

Questions this calculator answers

How many 80 lb bags of concrete are in a cubic yard?

45 bags. One 80 lb bag yields 0.6 cubic feet of concrete, and a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so 27 divided by 0.6 is 45 bags.

How many 60 lb bags of concrete are in a cubic yard?

60 bags. One 60 lb bag yields 0.45 cubic feet, and 27 cubic feet divided by 0.45 is 60 bags.

How many 40 lb bags of concrete are in a cubic yard?

90 bags. One 40 lb bag yields 0.3 cubic feet, and 27 cubic feet divided by 0.3 is 90 bags.

Is it cheaper to use 40, 60, or 80 lb bags?

80 lb bags are usually the cheapest per cubic foot of concrete, since you pay less for bag packaging per unit of material. 40 lb and 60 lb bags cost more per cubic foot but are easier to lift and mix by hand.

At what point should I switch from bags to a ready-mix truck?

Past about 1 cubic yard, roughly 45 bags of 80 lb mix, a ready-mix delivery is usually cheaper and faster than mixing that many bags by hand. Use the concrete slab calculator to compare a ready-mix estimate for the same pour.

Does the bag count already include extra for waste?

Yes. The default 10 percent waste allowance is added to your volume before the bag count is rounded up, so the result already covers spillage and an uneven subgrade.
